Sexual Disorders

Therapy is often helpful in dealing with a sexual disorder, and therapists can offer many tools and education that are helpful in coping with or eliminating sexual disorders. A therapist may help by addressing dysfunctional sexual beliefs and behaviors. For example, unrealistic expectations of sex, propagated by society and culture, can interfere with sexual experiences and performance. And, because blood pressure has such a vital role in the functioning of sex organs, therapy can be in helpful in reducing anxiety that may be altering blood pressure to a problematic degree. This is especially crucial for treating erectile dysfunction.

Therapy can also be a platform for learning about the sexual response cycle to better learn how to adjust one’s practices to fit how bodies naturally progress through stages of arousal. If one finds that their sexual disorder is occurring in the context of a specific relationship, it may be helpful to better understand and adjust patterns of behaviors which are hindering sexual experiences. For some, exploring and addressing past abuse or traumatic experiences may be key in overcoming a sexual disorder.

Common sexual disorders include:

  • Delayed ejaculation
  • Female orgasmic disorder
  • Erectile disorder
  • Premature ejaculation
  • Pelvic pain disorder
