Sand Tray Therapy is a hands-on, interactive type of therapy that involves the use of a large tray of sand in which objects and figurines known as “miniatures” are placed. Sandtray Therapy provides unique opportunities to express and resolve internal conflict without the use of verbal language. This can be especially helpful for children who have no developed their language capacities to an adult level, but is applicable for teens and adults as well. Because trauma and other experiences are stored in non-verbal parts of our brains, Sand Tray Therapy can be effective when expressing ourselves through words has been insufficient.
In a Sand Tray Therapy session at Corner Canyon Counseling, a person will select several miniatures from our shelves containing hundreds of different options in our dedicated Sand Tray Therapy room. They will then have opportunities to arrange those miniatures in the sand tray. From there, the patient and therapist can discuss choices of miniatures, explain the placement of them within the sand tray, and use the scene they created as a means of creating dialogue to discuss experiences and facilitate growth.
