Foods That May Help Reduce Your Stress Levels

Anxiety and stress can be debilitating for some. It can be hard to focus on other things when plagued by stress and anxiety. Simple fixes such as adjusting your diet can make all the difference. Here are some foods that have been proven to help boost moods and reduce stress and anxiety levels.

Foods Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 rich foods have been linked to a decrease in anxiety and stress. Specifically, an anti-inflammatory omega three fatty acid known as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) has been shown to reduce anxiety. To get more Omega-3s in your diet, choose foods such as Salmon, Tuna, Walnuts and Flaxseeds.

Chamomile Tea

Start boiling some water, because chamomile tea has been proven to calm people down and reduce anxiety. Chamomile capsules are shown to have the same effect, but people should always speak to their physicians before starting any supplements.

Dark Chocolate

If you eat chocolate when you’re feeling down, you may be doing the right thing, just make sure it is dark chocolate. Serotonin and endorphins are neurotransmitters that make you happy. Because dark chocolate causes an increase of these neurotransmitters in your brain, dark chocolate has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety. Eating dark chocolate regularly also causesĀ a decrease in cortisol, a stress hormone. Not only that, but dark chocolate contains flavanols, so they can aid in maintaining heart health.

Blueberries

Thanks to Vitamin C and antioxidants, blueberries are a good snack choice when you are feeling stressed. Enjoy blueberries frozen, dipped in dark chocolate, with yogurt, or even just fresh for a delicious and healthy snack.

Milk

A glass of milk at bedtime may be a good thing after all. Milk contains a protein called lactium. Lactium has the power to lower blood sugar and reduce cortisol in the body. This makes you more calm and reduces stress.

Avocados

Avocados contain lots of B vitamins, and anxiety has been linked to B vitamin deficiencies. Enjoy slices of avocado on toast, in a smoothie, with a little salt and lime on it, or however you like!

Foods High in Magnesium

Magnesium deficiencies have been linked to anxiety, and when people are stressed, their magnesium levels tend to go down. When you are stressed, it is a good idea to nourish yourself with magnesium-rich foods. Foods such as bananas, soybeans and pineapple are all high in magnesium.

Although what you eat is not always going to cure anxiety and stress, eating these foods can help. And remember, avoid becoming “hangry.” Simply not eating can heighten stress and anxiety, and make a person less happy.
