Organic Disorders are put into a different category than other mental health disorders because they are obviously caused by some injury to the brain. This injury can be the result of diseases or other medical complications (e.g., stroke, head injury) that directly change someone’s ability to function at their optimal level. Organic Disorders can vary from person to person depending on the location and type of injury to the brain. Common symptoms that occur with Organic Disorders include delirium or dementia, impaired ability to think, irritability, problems with voluntary movement, visual abnormalities, mood changes, and impairment in one’s memory. Because causes and symptoms can vary so widely, treatment and prognosis will be individualized for every person with an Organic Disorder.
